Almost 3 Weeks Old

This Sunday, Kate will be 3 weeks old, and that fact is WAY too hard to believe. I don't feel like I've been sleep deprived for almost 3 weeks. (NOT!) This portion of mothering has had its challenges for me. Knowing that I am the sole source of nutrition and sustenance for such a tiny human being has been a bit stressful for me at times. Both she and I are having to learn a lot about breastfeeding. We seemed to have conquered most of our challenges as I write. I'm sure that many of your prayers have been what has buttressed me during a few LOW middle of the night moments where nothing seemed to be going as it should and I was so sleepy I could have curled up on the carpeted floor of the nursery just to be in the prone position. The good signs are that she is growing (as well as churning out her share of dirty/wet diapers in this world!). As she crossed over her 2 week anniversary (her due date, incidentally), she seemed to wake up a bit more. As Jennifer remarked last week, "Kate is the sleepingest baby I've ever seen." Now, she has some more wakeful times where she looks around with her big, beautiful eyes and seems to be taking it all in. But, to chronicle her main activity for this week, you are graced with two sleeping pictures.

FACToids:
She eats for about an hour each time, and then "usually" waits for 3 hours. She seems to last a bit longer if she stays awake for awhile before taking her nap.
She still loves her infant carrier - we went shopping yesterday and she slept the entire time!
Her pants all fit her up to her armpits -- think Hammer Pants!
Her favorite place to nap is in someone's arms.

I love her dark brown hair. She's a beautiful little girl - even in her sleep. Congratulations on surviving the first few weeks. I'm sure it will get easier as both you and Kate get better at it.

Also in Picture #2 - the huge pants are hilarious! :-)

Sleeping baby pictures...always some of my favorites. I hope other moms will agree, but in a few months, you'll probably forget how tired you were while Kate was a newborn. I have fallen asleep feeding babies one to many times and that kind of scares Michael a little bit. But it's some of the best sleep ever!

Kate is soooo cute! Don't let your feeding Kate be too stressful. As long as she's growing she's getting what she needs. And when you don't think you're eating the best...don't worry about that either. Your body is stealing all the good stuff and sending it right to her! Have you had nursing problems? Just to encourage you...it probably won't take so long to feed her each time as you both get better at it. Keep the updates coming! And feel free to call or email if you have any questions. Teisha is also a good source for this...based on my experience.

Kate is so pretty. I can't wait to meet her in person. Congratulations on surviving the first 3 weeks. You will be shocked how quickly this time goes by....we will be thinking of you guys as you continue to adjust.

The nursing thing can be sooo stressful, so don't feel alone in that at all. The first night home from the hospital I was up sobbing at 1:45am, convinced Emma was going to hate me the rest of her life because I couldn't seem to get the nursing thing down. Ah, the hormones. It gets so much better and so much easier. In no time at all these days will be a mere very foggy memory, and you will wonder how she got so big so fast =).

I must have written too soon. Kate & I had been on a pretty steady schedule until 2 days ago. She decided that sometimes she wants to eat every 2 hrs & sometimes she'd rather sleep for 4 (during the day, of course!. I guess she's using more energy for her wakeful times, so that's what accounts for the shift.

Thanks for all of your encouragement! I can use every bit of it!

Glad to hear things are getting better. It's so nice that you have friends who have been in that situation and can reassure you that it's all normal and will get better in no time. :-)
