Gone are the days of the 15 spf. In my youthful hunt for a tan, I would skimp by on the lowest amount of uva/uvb protection that Banana Boat could offer. And, if I could smell like I was in the Hawaian Islands, all the better. My usual m.o. was a little burn meant a lot of tan. What was I thinking???? These days, I slather on 55 spf or 70 spf. Life as a mom is too short to be moaning away the nights wishing that you could sleep totally naked with aloe vera creamed everywhere and NOT stick to the sheets. Not to mention that likelihood of bringing on skin cancer in your later years! It all happened the summer I was pregnant with Kate. Supposedly, pregnant women burn more easily than non-pregnant women. So, I determined that I would not burn. . I pushed the envelope and went for 30 spf. . the next summer, Kate was a little baby, and I had to slather HER up with the high powered baby sunscreen, and it just made sense to share. As we head off to the beach this week, spf 55 will be in my bag. Slather it on, baby. What spf do YOU wear?

With all this white skin around here, we use about the highest spf we can find.
I too have gone the way of spf 50. And the funny thing is that I am actually getting a tan this year. Go figure.
I still use 30 as I rarely stay outside long enough to need an spf 50 or 75. I'll burn in about 10 minutes without sunscreen so with 30 on I can stay out 300 minutes without getting burned (theoretically). I'm usually only out for 2 hours max. If I'm swimming I reapply immediately after getting out of the pool since water decreases the efficacy. I've always been a big sunscreen wearer because I burn just thinking about the sun and of course I've continued that tradition with Greta even though I feel fairly certain she has Graham's much less sensitive skin (sun wise).
I do hate putting it on...feels like such a hassle and I hate that greasy feeling so if I have an option, I swim around dusk or at night. No sunscreen needed then!
Wow, you are officially turning into your mom! HeeHee! Congratulations on your accomplishment. Miss Ya!
Imee -- I know, I know. But my mom has WAY more talent in her pinky than I do in my two hands & feet. So, I have a few years to catch up with her. By my age she had 3 kids (or was on her way to the 3rd)! I'm not sure when her crafty streak hit.
Amy -- I forgot to add that to my blog -- I'm getting an easier tan this year even with all of the slathering. I guess I'm outside a lot more "playing" because of Kate.
Kelley -- I still haven't gotten good about putting it on if I'm not going swimming. If I'm just going to be at the park, I do NOT like to go through all of that. Although my face cream does have 15 spf (whatever that gets me, I don't know).
hmm I don't usually use/need anything with spf. I was born with dark skin and still have that dark skin. If I am going to be in the sun for several hours at a time the lowest spf usually is all I would need. But even then, I may not burn if I don't wear any. When Nathan and I decide to have kids I will test that theory though and see if I don't need to put a higher spf on me.
